Caltec Academy Makerere history

Caltec Academy Makerere has a rich history of education and service. Founded in 1973 by the Brothers of Christian Instruction, the Academy has grown from a small institution to a recognized institution of higher learning. It has been a pioneer in offering post-secondary courses and has played a significant role in the education of the youth in Uganda. The Academy's commitment to faith-based education and academic excellence has made it a respected institution in the country.

Caltec Academy was founded by Charles, Arthur and Lobo. The name CALTEC originated from the founders' names and the original plan to establish a technical college.

Following the departure of the original founders from Uganda, the school came under the management of the Brothers of Christian Instruction (BCI), who continued its educational mission and Christian formation.

1980s–90s. Growth in academic reputation. Caltec gained recognition for its academic performance, particularly at Advanced Level, and became one of the established schools associated with the Brothers of Christian Instruction in Uganda.

2003. Introduction of the O-Level section. The school expanded its educational provision by introducing Ordinary Level education alongside its established Advanced Level programme. Its first O-Level candidates sat their national examinations in 2006.

2026. Celebrating the legacy of Christian education. On 13 June 2026, Caltec Academy joined the wider Brothers of Christian Instruction family in celebrating 100 years of the congregation's presence and educational ministry in Uganda. The school's celebration reflected on its heritage of faith, sacrifice and service under the theme “We Remember, We Celebrate, We Believe.”

Today, Caltec Academy Makerere continues to build on its founding vision by combining academic development with Christian values and the holistic formation of young people. Its history reflects a journey from an initial technical education vision to a broader secondary school mission rooted in faith, learning and service.
